Everyone doesn’t have to have every experience. I’ve never had heart problems, but I try to follow public health guidelines to maintain good heart health. I listen to friends who suffer with heart-related issues. Fortunately, in the case of cardio-vascular health, information and education are abundant. Health professionals regularly focus cardio wellness, including prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation.
Unfortunately, information about brain health is less plentiful and tends to focus on certain populations, particularly those who have just received their welcome letter to AARP, or who are eligible or near eligibility for Medicare. Increasingly, this sub-group is deluged with advertisements about medications, vitamins, or certain foods that claim they will prevent or reduce the effects of dementia. Preventive equipment, including helmets, seat belts, car seats for children, enter public awareness about the brain, when the risks of head injury are prevalent.
I think of the brain like the deep sea. A world that is not only largely unknown to regular people, but, in many ways, seems unfathomable to someone not steeped in the sciences. The sea contains about 240,000 different species of life. I’m thrilled to see a whale and various forms of life…
